A 74-year-old Pennsylvania woman is crediting her 14-year-old neighbor with saving her from a burning house — by using a rickety ladder.

“I’m grateful to be alive,” said Charlene McMasters from her hospital bed on Wednesday. “It was quite an ordeal.”

New Castle Assistant Fire Chief David Joseph commended Justin Ritchie’s quick thinking, calling the hero “humble and quiet.”

“Even when he was telling me about it, he was shaken and rattled,” Joseph said, adding, “The more I listened to the story unfold, the better it got.”

Attempts by msnbc.com to contact Ritchie were unsuccessful Wednesday.

Joseph said the incident happened about 5:30 a.m. on Tuesday, when a fire broke out on the first floor of McMasters’ two-story home in western Pennsylvania. Fire officials still do not know what caused the blaze that destroyed her home.

“I don’t know what it was, but I remember something woke me up,” McMasters said. “I noticed smoke and I rushed to get my handbag and I went to the window and screamed and screamed.”

Ritchie told Joseph he woke up to his dog barking and then heard a woman shouting.

“He went out and saw this woman hanging out of the window… It was Charlene and her house was on fire,” Joseph said.

Ritchie spotted an old wooden ladder that had been abandoned next to McMasters’ house and made a dash to the house. The teen set it against the burning structure, warning McMasters that her escape route was unstable and rickety, Joseph said.

McMasters said she didn’t care. She took two steps down and the ladder broke.

“I came crashing down and fell a long way,” she said.

McMasters said she suffered broken ribs from the 10-foot fall, but that was OK. She was being released from the hospital Wednesday afternoon and planned to spend Thanksgiving Day with her children at their homes in Pennsylvania.

“I got a walker, a good therapy session and I will heal,” McMasters said.

“I can’t thank this young man enough. I don’t know what would have happened had he not come to my rescue.”

To say that nine-year old Anaiah Rucker is a hero is an understatement, because there are truly no words to describe this young girl, who saved her younger sister from sure death, while putting her own life on the line.

February 4th, 2011 began as a typical morning in the Rucker household. After breakfast, Anaiah and her five year-old sister Camry, left for the school bus stop, situated across their house, while their mother watched from the balcony.

It was raining heavily, so both girls had their hoodies on, which is probably the reason they did not notice a truck that was approaching, as they tried to run across the road.

By the time Anaiah saw it from the corner of her eye, it was too late to prevent an impact – However, it was not too late to save her sister from fatal injury. Without giving it a second thought, Anaiah pulled Camry out of harm’s way, and ended up bearing the entire brunt of the impact herself.

The nine-year old collapsed on the ground and stopped breathing for a few minutes. Fortunately, Loretta Berriman, a school bus driver who had watched the horrifying event as it unfolded, ran to her rescue and performed CPR, until she felt a heart beat.

The two sisters were rushed to the hospital, where young Camry was declared free from major injury. Anaiah, on the other hand, had broken both her legs, fractured her neck, damaged her spleen and destroyed a kidney.

Surgeons worked for over ten hours to save the big-hearted girl’s life, and while they were able to repair her right leg and neck, her left leg was too shattered and had to be amputated the day following her accident. It took a month of rehabilitation before this brave little girl was released from the hospital and brought home to a heroes’ welcome by her schoolmates and other residents of Madison.

Despite her severe injuries, Anaiah doesn’t believe that she did anything heroic, because if she hadn’t taken the hit, her little sister would have probably not survived, which, would have been worse. What an amazing big sister!

Ok, I have installed WordPress on my hosts server. I am using Networksolutions as my host and have for years. They work for me and I have had no problems at all. None. This is not an endorsement, just the fact. If I had had any problems with them, I would have been out of here years ago. I have recommended them to others and would continue to do so.

Let me say, that GenCart SEEMS to be like WordPress in that they both are, what I would call, template-based concepts. You can install themes and manipulate them. I installed WordPress because I was tired of having to install a version for IE, a version for Mozilla, a version for Chrome, etc. Detecting which version they were using when they visited the site and then loading the corresponding webpage version accordingly. Frustrating when the images move between versions.

So. I have WordPress installed and my first few blog entries done. I will be transferring my images, layouts, and content over to the WordPress version from here on. As I said before, I am probably going to make mistakes along the way, so if I start down some road I shouldn’t be going down or if you have any suggestions, let me know quickly. Explain what your idea is and why I am about to crash into a brick wall! Preferably before I hit the wall.

So, I have my Workpress installed and downloaded a copy to my local computer for backup. I am now going to see about downloading a theme to use as a template. I noticed there are many out there to choose from.

All for now.

This is a new blog which I have created out of necessity. My Animal Hoops website was compromised and most browsers reported it as a bad site to visit. For those of you who have not seen the original site, I created it from scratch using my wife’s images and guidance. We chose to use GenCart for our website to sell a variety of products from Coloring Books to coffee mugs with images of Hippos. I had started a “weekly” newsletter that I was not able to keep up due to other obligations, but the primary problem was that the site was compromised very quickly.

I do not think the fact that we were using GenCart was the problem. I think my lack of basic security awareness was the problem. I will enumerate this things later so that others will not repeat my mistakes.

Anyway, I want to rebuild the website and let you all know what I am doing along the way. I am new to the whole blogging thingy, but as I go along my journey, perhaps you can learn from my mistakes, offer advice, and guide me as I continue on my way.

Joe
